I was pleasantly surprised at how unique this ebook was in approaching the coming of age story of a 14 year old boy in a monetarily poor town who discovers he has a talent for magic. Randall lives in a feudal system where Magic is forbidden, and folks who practice it are put to death. He is second born, so he will not be able to inherit his father's business and has to seek out an apprenticeship for his livelihood. Quite frankly, the pickings are rather lean! There was a mixture of Harry Potter type mysteries with a dash of Merlin's Apprentice thrown in, and quite a few twists that kept me reading happily for several days. One of my favorite points of the story was the magical imp that befriended him on this journey and I would like to learn more about in the next book. Oh, and I especially enjoy books that stand alone, but maintain my interest in future stories. Thank you for making this available for free! I look forward to reading your next book.

While I indeed enjoyed this story, at times it was a bit too involved with trivial bits. The main character was likable, but sadly he never actually seemed to grow or mature as an individual. What I mean is simply this, after everything he had to endure--the physical hardships, pain, suffering, and once even death (spoiler alert) he never matured as a person. His thinking, behavior, and actions were all selfish...except when it came to his special friend (Berry). Although this was quite fun to read, and there was lots of action and magic and drama ... I still had a feeling that something was missing from the story. After all was said and done, Randall never really seemed to learn anything ... he still never really seemed to grow up as a person. Not that this was a bad thing, some of us never do 'mature' or grow up. And he seemed to have lost the one thing that made him special or different from everyone else--Magic.
The story started well and quickly hooked me in. Randall is a young boy growing up in a backwoods neighborhood, where people are superstitious and see people who can work with magic, commonly known as Mages, are evil and touched by the devil. So Randall is pretty put out when a stranger marks him out as a Mage. Before Randall knows what's happening, he's forced to travel with the stranger, named Erliand, and become an apprentice. A large part of the book, especially the first half is taken up with Randall learning different spells and how to use them. This is fascinating at first and it's clear the author has put a lot of thought into this side of the world he's created. But ultimately the training starts to drag on a little long for me.
The second half of the book is much better. Erliand is attacked and Randall is forced to flee with no idea of what ultimately became of his Master. Randall is forced to travel, staying one step ahead of his enemies. Unfortunately he quickly realises he has no idea who he can trust and a couple of betrayals force him to flee once more, barely escaping with his life. The conclusion is satisfying and hints at the possibility of a sequel.
My apologies to the author, I actually read this over 2 years ago and just noticed that I neglected to review it. That is a shame, because I loved the story enough to save it in my "Best Books Collection" on my for re-reading. Much of the story is hazy now but I do remember rooting for the young boy, and I absolutely loved the little Imp who nobody could believe was helping the boy. The boy and Imp were a heck of a team!
"A Touch of Magic" was a complete story but I see there's now another book after this one so I'm going to check it out right now. I hope it'll be as good as this one is but I'll have to let you know when I've finished. This is a book I highly recommend if you like fantasy and magic at all.
A Touch of Magic takes place in a medieval fantasy world, particularly in a small island country where magic is outlawed. This isn't much of a problem for Randall Miller, middle son of a businessman in a backwater hick town whose biggest dream is to land an apprenticeship at the local job fair, until the apprenticeship he lands is one with a mage.
The plot comes in slow stretches and then sudden bursts, and that isn't to say one or the other is bad. One of the longest slow stretches of the book was probably the best page-turning section, teaching both Randall and the reader much about the world, while a favorite scene later in the book happens very quickly and couldn't have slowed down without hurting the tension.
The story of Randall Miller has the benefit and misfortune of being about an inexperienced adolescent. He often whines, fails at what he's trying to do, and at the times where he does accomplish something, he goes too far with it. His subconscious seems to believe that screwing up a situation is a good learning experience for Randall. He does learn quite a bit over the course of the novel, and though he begins as a bit childish even for his age, he's forced to become a man if he wants to survive the consequences of his own mistakes. That's something that grows subtly through the book and Randall never feels like a little adult--at any given time, he's exactly who he should be. If there was any downside to his character, it's that the only rapport generated solidly through the novel isn't captured in dialogue with another character, and often other characters come off only as much as Randall notices them. That said, the narrative is so invested in Randall's perception of events, never once leaving his point of view, that you never really notice while reading.
It's that investment that carries the book. Randall's thought processes are clear and understandable to the reader, even if you're left shaking your head. Just as often though, Randall will think of something that the adults around him don't after being stuck in their ways. Creativity is a valuable character trait, and as Randall learns magic, he learns to cultivate this other skill. Watching and experiencing his personal growth, and learning with him, is worth your time.
