Shiloh Pool Against the Tide edition by Jori Sams Religion Spirituality eBooks

Shiloh's Pool is an interesting story but needs some more work. The story itself, a trip down memory lane as a woman reflects on the beginning years of her life, is interesting enough, many of the the situations the young Shiloh gets into are believable, but many of them don't need to be in the story. Some of the scenarios are disconnected- for instance, Shiloh and Emma have these two cowboy costumes that they got for Halloween but aren't going to be able to use because their mother has to work, but when Poppy gets to take them trick-or-treating, they are Tinkerbell and a cactus. There are several grammatical errors that will not be caught by a simple spell check. I think the author could have shown how hard Shiloh's life was in less time. I had a hard time grasping the feeling of it being written as Shiloh was growing up in the 70s, the story felt more like it was taking place in the 50s. The last few chapters in this book made the rest of the book worthwhile. One moment in the final few chapters actually brought tears to my eyes. I was given a copy of this book for my honest review.

Shiloh Pool Against the Tide edition by Jori Sams Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

This is almost like a personal peak inside the world or diary of a young girl growing up.
At points you feel intrusive and sometimes you have to pinch yourself that this is a fictional tale because, my goodness the author must have spent a time and a half producing and fine tuning the back stories here.
The cast of characters and their experiences are un-nervingLly real.
I remember when I was young how we used to make believe and 'get married' and then be dumped the next day and I remember kneeling by my own bed praying about the wind the fires and for Jesus to protect everyone and I'm sorry for this and that and so forth.
Shiloah is the hero of our story and hero, is the right word. The tough challenges, the memories that are shared and walking through her illness that crops up at the worst times..
I really like the way the author trusts you as a reader to think about what she is telling, believing they you trust the character to tell you what happens instead of painfully spelling it out. Sometimes less is more.
The tension between the parents, the breakdown of relationships, friendships, starting new ones and the excitement and nerves of it all was so well described and beautifully put across..
I felt a sense of nostalgia whilst reading this book that was brilliantly and well described, bringing a sense of history to the pages that I felt as a reader, tangible.

At many points I wanted to shout [yes, at the thinking Shiloh could hear me and it would change the story!] when she dated Jack, smoked a cigarette and generally broke the rules or you could see her heading in a certain direction but it was really heartfelt the way the author describes how it made the character feel and you nod along thinking yep know that one, heard that one, thank god I didn't go that far or make that choice.

I thought the way the Chrisitan thread, run through Shiloh's life, was well written and placed perfectly in someone trying to find something to believe in, trying to gasp hold of meaning and falling in the wrong path.
Although I was brought up in the church many of my school friends dabbled in the occult and palm reading or obsessed with horoscopes and as Shiloh's journey near the end of the book begins to turn towards a Christain path I found myself taken back to the same conversation as was described here.

This is a fantastic read, slow paced but interesting and develops well, you want to know more about Shiloh and what happens next, which I can't wait for.

I want to thank the author for waiting for this review.x
