I really enjoyed reading this book about life at a Christian boarding school in Africa in the late 60's and early 70's. The author is an excellent writer and I found her stories fascinating and entertaining. I felt as though I was right there with her experiencing it. After finishing the book I had to immediately go online to research all I could about the school. I also enjoyed seeing the pictures the author and others posted online of the school and students. I wish she would write a part two about her life in High School. I wonder if it was as adventurous?Product details

Having worked at a boarding school in Kenya, a country with a strong English influence, I could relate to the stories about the staff and students of a boarding school in Zambia. This book presents a positive outlook on the life of missionary children as they live away from home while attending a school in one of the most remote areas of Zambia. Friendships formed at boarding school last a life time, as do the experiences. Few children get the opportunity to see so much of the world and mature so early, as do missionary children who attend boarding school.
I couldn't put this down and finished it in about a day. I attended this unique school about a decade after the author and could relate to so many of the memories. Linda Burklin writes well - with humour, honesty and an amazing memory for the details of life in this British boarding school in rural Zambia. I think anyone associated with the school would find this fascinating but it will also be enjoyed by third culture kids and those who love them, those familiar with this part of the world, and anyone who loves a good yarn about the shenanigans of children. You'll be amused and shocked and you may not be able to decide if Sakeji pupils should be envied or pitied. This is a remarkable book about a remarkable childhood. You won't regret buying it.
This Rich and Wondrous Earth, by Mrs. Linda Burklin, is an excellent and well-written book telling about her childhood growing up in central Africa at a boarding school for missionary children. Mrs. Burklin clearly and in a manner easy to read tells about her adventures and education there. She conveys her ideas and experiences clearly. This book is very enthralling! I thoroughly enjoyed it, and especially her account of their half-term amusements. During their time at the river, they would select shady areas to build “half-term houses” in, because at half-term they were allowed to spend the Rest Hour in those “houses” with the others who helped build it. Groups of girls would select a spot and build the half-term house together. Much time was passed by discussing what to furnish the house with!
I really recommend this book.
Oh my goodness! Linda Burklin's adventures at a boarding school in Africa are amazing. As the child of missionaries, she was placed in the boarding school along with her two brothers, while her parents served on the mission field. This book details Burklin's days living in a dorm with other girls, going to school, building relationships, peer pressure, and all the mishaps of growing up. But it's all done in Africa. What a gift for the reader to share Linda's experiences.
I've had several adult friends who were missionary kids and spent years in boarding school. When asked about what those years were like, they always gave me sketchy answers. None of these satisfied my curiosity. There was no way to go back and be a missionary kid in boarding school, and I believe the practice is going out of date. Perhaps not, but I had given up the idea of getting a full picture. And then this book came into my hands.
I relished the tales of snakes and mosquito netting, fruit and bugs and friendships and bullying. The telling is so much richer than I expected personal, straightforward, humble, and ringing with authenticity. I thoroughly enjoyed this book have gone back to read my favorite sections. (A lot of these involved the river and half-term days.) Another favorite-the wonderful punishment of being sent to the closet to sleep. If only the faithful (and somewhat quirky) teachers knew what was going on, there would have been a lot less fun, and this wonderful book would have been so much shorter. Indeed, I'm glad they were oblivious to nighttime drama and pranks that livened up the boarding school.
I went to this school for a number of years, and this book reminded of all that it meant to me. I had lost so much information through time, and this book crystallized my fading memories of Sakeji School. I laughed and cried my way through it and finished it in two days. Well worth a read for all who have gone to boarding school, or what want to know what it is like for a kid, thousands of miles away from home, to cope in one.
