The books in this "series" share a viable plot, well defined characters you can identify with, a believable progression of events--so why do they fail? Because of the format. The first book set the stage, everything that happens in the first book happens again in the second book except seen from a different perspective. It's not exactly cut-and-paste, but it certainly feels that way. The first book suffers from stick-figure syndrome, in which Thomas is little more than a hollow space from which a spoken sentence comes now and then.
The second book, this one, is somewhat more fleshed out, assuming you've already read the first book. The primary characters of the second book (who were the stick figures in the first) begin to make sense.
But it is a very unfulfilling way to get a story. It isn't two related stories in two books. It's one story, divided in half and split between two books, with neither book being able to stand on its own. I certainly hope this concept doesn't catch on!

Mr Cavendish I Presume Two Dukes of Wyndham Book 2 Julia Quinn 9780060876111 Books Reviews
To those who were disappointed in the way the book was written, as a simultaneous story to the previous book, I ask - do you not get it? Knowing this going in, I was fascinated by how the story looked from other perspectives. Things that I could only guess about in the first book were expanded in the next. And, since the two couples are different people, they also have different experiences. This is TOUGH to do! Brava, Julia!
I must confess that I love ANYTHING written by Julia Quinn. Her stories are always well thought out, and incredibly satisfying. I especially enjoy this approach of writing the same story from the two different perspectives. Each of the heroes and heroines are genuine individuals, true to their time, but ultimately easy to relate to in in today's terms. Well worth the read!!
Fate played a cruel joke and it takes a strong man with great integrity to do what Thomas did. And how much more can Amelia prove her love than when she chose to be with Thomas in spite of his new status.
I also like the unexpected twist at the end. It shows that if you the right thing, fate will reward you in the end.
The characters were OK, plot was decent. I read both books in the series back to back. Well, this book is just the first book through another POV. I caught myself skipping huge parts. While I appreciate the the different outlooks, it could easily have been one cohesive book.
If you are at all familiar with Julia Quinn's books you should enjoy this book. Ms. Quinn takes a storyline (previously seen in "Lost Duke of Wyndham") and approaches the story from Thomas Cavendish's point of view. While other reviews "pan" this approach it shows how well Ms. Quinn understands the characters within both books.
Thomas Cavendish believes and was brought up to believe that he is the Duke of Wyndham. It defines his life and his character. Enter his heretofore unknown cousin - Jack Audley, who happens to be a highwayman - who is suddenly identified by their mutual grandmother to be the son of Thomas' fathers older brother and apparently the REAL Duke of Wyndham.
Thomas has been engaged to Amelia Willoughby since she was in the cradle - literally. She has been brought up to believe she will be the next Duchess of Wyndham. With the appearance of Jack Audley and his claim to the title, two worlds are turned upside down.
Do give this book a read - it is a pleasant surprise.
I normally love Julia Quinn's books, but I gave up on this one. If you read The Lost Duke of Wyndham, then you have read this one as well. It is pretty much the same book just from another character's perspective.
I really enjoyed the first of these books and was eagerly looking forward to reading this one. It was quite a disappointment to realize that eighty percent of this second book was almost a carbon copy of the first. We did learn a bit more about what Thomas Cavendish and and Amelia Crowland thought about each other in the first book. However, the dialogue and plot were almost identical and it was not until almost the end that the plot became primarily about Mr. Cavendish and Amelia.
It would have been so much more interesting if Ms. Quinn had written more of a summary of the first novel about Jack and Grace and then written more about Mr. Cavendish and Amelia.
Ms. Quinn's novels are usually fun to read, so I will certainly continue to buy her work even if this was less than satisfactory.
